This year, 奥克兰 大学’s Department of Theatre will present 加勒比海的梦中情人 as its annual children’s theatre production.

Based on Caribbean folk tales from Cuba, Haiti 和 Puerto Rico, the production traces the development of the steel b和 from its origins in Africa drumming through colonial repression to the modern day steel drum of Trinidad 和 Tobago.

The production was conceived 和 directed by Kerro Knox III, professor of theatre 和 associate director of the School of Music, Theatre 和 Dance, 和 follows in the traditions of his previous shows, Anansi塞伦盖蒂, which were both based on African folklore, 和 Just So故事, after the work of Rudyard Kipling.

“The show is aimed toward elementary age groups, but there is plenty to appeal to all ages with the catchy music, lively dance 和 fun stories,诺克斯说. “Student choreographers 和 designers have been an integral part of devising this exciting new theatrical experience.”

DeNetria吉布森, an acting major at OU, said she was proud to help choreograph the show because it allowed her to delve deeper into the cultures of the Caribbean.

“I crafted most of the choreography with the help of one of my relatives, 和 the rest came from research,”她说。. “With the help of many in the show, my friend Tuger 和 I were able to create very fun 和 informative choreography.”

The production also features Caribbean music arranged by Musical Director 和 Special Lecturer Patrick Fitzgibbon, which will be performed by 12 students from the School of Music, Theatre 和 Dance, all of whom perform in all three art forms.

“I love the versatility of this show,约翰·斯科特说, a dance major at OU who is playing multiple roles in the production. “It includes singing, dancing, acting, 和 best of all — live music! Our creative process was so much fun to participate in, as each of us contributed knowledge of our crafts, 和 combined them to tell the story of the evolution of the steel b和.”

Performances will take place in Varner Hall on the campus of 奥克兰 大学 on Friday, 5月17日上午10点.m. 7分.m., 和 on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission, 老年人8美元, 和 $6 for students 和 children, 和 can be purchased online at etix.com.
